Local History

Drumcliffe & WB YEATS Grave

Probably North Sligo's most famous landmark, the Grave of William Butler Yeats. Although Yeats' died in France in 1939, his wish to be buried in Drumcliffe 'Under Bare Ben Bulben's head' was not realised until 1948. His grave can now be found in the small churchyard at Drumcliffe (8 miles from Mullaghmore), where his grandfather was once a rector. "Cast a cold eye on life, on death, horseman pass by"

Lisadell House

Lisadell House, a Grecian revival mansion, situated in North Sligo, (10 minutes from Mullaghmore) was built in the 1830's. It was once home to the Gore-Booth family. The artic explorer, Henry Goore-Booth was born in the house in 1843, as were his daughters, Eva and Constance. Constance, a political activist, married a Polish Count to become Countess Markievicz. She played a leading role in the 1916 Rising, escaping execution only because she was a woman. Eva and Constance were friends of W B Yeats, who spent much time in Lisadell House, writing poetry. Eva too was a poet. Lisadell House is the only stately home in Sligo, which is open to the public. "The light of evening, Lissadell, Great windows open to the south, Two girls in silk kimonos, both Beautiful, one a gazelle". Tel: 071 9163150

Inishmurray Island

Boat trips (arranged through Beach Hotel) depart daily during peak season from Mullaghmore to this 225 acre island 14 miles away. Inishmurray Island was home to 102 people until they left for the mainland in 1948. It is now un-inhabited, except for the fantastic plant and bird life. Inishmurray, meaning the island of 'Mulreach' (who was the first bishop of Killala and founder of the Island's first Christian Monastery), has many ancient remains of houses, churches and monuments.

Classiebawn Castle

Mullaghmore's Classiebawn Castle stands overlooking the forbidding rock-faced cliffs & tide-washed strands of the Northern Coast and looks down on the windswept Innishmurray Island. The Castle was built by Lord Mount Temple in 1874 and was later the holiday home of Lord Louis Mountbatten. The castle is not open to the public.

Creevykeel Pre-historic Tombs

Creevykeel Court Tomb is the finest example of a classic court tomb in Ireland today and is only 3 minutes from The Beach Hotel. The entrance is at the wide end of the cairn, there is a circular ritual court which is marked by upright stones, to a divided burial chamber beyond. Two further chambers, possibly passage graves inserted later into the complex, are sited behind. The tomb was built c 3,000 B.C.
